NEWS: Belfast Exposed 2023 Exhibition – She / Her / Hers / Herself by Anthony Luvera
Belfast Exposed is presenting a new exhibition from London-based artist Anthony Luvera called She / Her / Hers / Herself. The show is launching on February 2, 2023, and explores a five-year collaboration between Luvera and Sarah Wilson.
The collaboration navigates Wilson’s individual experience and transgender identity, including work that maps a range of personal and career changes. The project will be illustrated through a combination of photography, installation, and audio-visual presentation.
Luvera and Wilson met through another project called Let Us Eat Cake, which was also exhibited at Belfast Exposed in 2017. Since then, they have been working together to document Wilson’s transition through her personal trans identity. Over five years, Wilson photographed daily experiences and shared these with Luvera who then created formal portraits that aimed to reflect Wilson’s perspective of her identity.
The exhibition features these photographs, but also sculpture and a video presentation. The artists have created a functioning nail bar installation that represents Wilson’s journey to becoming a beautician, expressing herself through makeup and beauty. Participants will be able to book a nail appointment with Wilson during the exhibition.
Presented in video form will be a three-screen element with footage of Wilson facing the camera, mirroring popular Youtube makeup tutorials. This is how Wilson first learned to apply makeup and inspired her new career.
At the heart of She / Her / Hers / Herself is an ongoing conversation between Sarah and me about the importance of positive representations of trans people. Individuals who identify as transgender are amongst the most marginalized and misunderstood people in our society. By collaborating with Sarah to co-create a depiction of the changes which have occurred in her life since coming out, I see this work not only as a representation of one individual’s experience of their trans femininity but as a reflection on the way cultural influences can more broadly shape and determine the expression of gender and identity. – Anthony Luvera
The show will run from February 2, 2023, to March 18, 2023. Opening night starts at 6 pm on February 2, 2023.
